Hat Making Class
A class where students can learn various hat and headwear design and production techniques
from basic hats to headdresses with a focus on fashion and style.

Overview
3 hours per session. A variety of hats and headwear made from different materials are organised so that they can be finished properly at their own pace. Each lesson is in a small group with a maximum of three students.

Curriculum
You can learn according to your skills from the Trial course, Elementary course, Basic course, Advanced course and Liberal course.

Morning 10:00~13:00
Afternoon 14:00~17:00
One weekday and one weekend (days of the week are fluid).

Curriculum
We have five different courses, each with a different skill set to start with.
Trial Course
Start with the most basic hat shape, the bucket hat, to experience hat making.

Trial course : Bucket Hat
Learn the structure of a hat while making a bucket hat, the most basic shape.
Lesson time : 3 sessions

Elementary course
In this course, you will make a basic fabric hat to learn about hat construction and fabric handling. In addition, as a gateway to the basic course, experience making a felted hat using a hat tree mould.
Elementary course1 : Beret
Make a beret. You will learn how to sew vertical pieces together.

Elementary course2 : Cap or Casquette
Make a cap or casquette with a hard peak.
Lesson time: 3 sessions

Elementary course3:Felt hat with wooden blocks
Make a hat using a hat wooden blocks, which is essential for authentic hat making. You will make a felt hat from hat felt called a ‘hat body’.
Lesson time : 4 sessions
Lesson fee : ¥55,000 *including materials

Basic Course
This is mainly an application of the Elementary course, where you will learn how to draw patterns and how to produce the desired shape.

Basic course1 : Bucket hat pattern deformation
Based on the basic bucket hat created in the Elementary course, you will learn how to pull a horizontal stitch pattern and how to develop the design.

Basic course2 : Beret, cap or casquette pattern deformation
Based on the beret, cap or casquette created in the Elementary course, you will learn how to draw a vertical stitch pattern, how to correct the volume and how to develop the design.

Basic course3 : Hat making using wooden blocks
Make a hat using a hat wooden blocks. Using a hat body made of seasonally appropriate material, you will make a hat using a wooden form of your choice.
Lesson time: 4 sessions

Workshop
These workshop can be taken in any combination with the basic course.
Workshop1 : Fabric flower
Make a fabric flower, an essential part of your couture headwear. You can choose from roses, camellias and peonies.
Lesson time : 3 sessions
Lesson fee : ¥38,500 *including materials


Workshop2 : Headband
You can make a catsuit of any width and shape you like. You can make a catsuit that is comfortable to wear and does not hurt or shift easily even if you wear it for a long time.
Lesson time : 3 sessions
Lesson fee : ¥42,900 *including some materials
Workshop3 : Head piece
Make a headpiece based on a hat body or braid.
Lesson time : 3 sessions
Lesson fee : ¥48,400

Advanced course
You can learn more advanced hat-making techniques, such as making hats from special materials and making hat moulds.

Liberal course
This course is for those who wish to learn more in depth as an application of each course, or who wish to create their own work using the techniques they have learnt. The course is open to students who have mastered a certain number of Kaori Millinery’s lessons.

Schedule
Lessons are held from 10:00-13:00 in the morning and from 14:00-17:00 in the afternoon.

Cancellation policy
Please contact us at least two days in advance if you wish to cancel or change your booking. If you cancel the day before or the day of the lesson, you will be charged a cancellation fee (¥3,000) for the following lesson.
Lesson fees and payment
Lesson fees vary for each course/curriculum. Please pay by bank transfer, cash, credit card or QR payment at the start of each course or curriculum. (Please refer to the course/curriculum descriptions for individual fees).
If you pay for the entire curriculum in one payment, you will receive a 5% discount on the price of each curriculum.
No refunds will be made in the event of a mid-course cancellation for personal reasons. Additional fees may be charged if the course time is exceeded by a significant amount.

Tokyo-based milliner and headwear designer working as a craftsman and headwear designer of bespoke hats, utilising the skills of both couture milliners and mass-produced hats.
